In August a Private Member's Bill was introduced in South Australia. This Bill - the Summary Offences (Prostitution Law Reform) Bill 2023 - would bring the Nordic Criminal Model into Australia for the first time! On Wednesday, 29th November, Members of the Legislative Council will vote on the Bill. We need to show them that South Australia says no to criminalising sex work, no to making sex workers lives more dangerous and no to undermining sex workers rights.
The Nordic Criminal Model, also called 'the Equality Model' or 'End-Demand Model' is far from what it's (always changing) name suggests. In reality, the model of the 'Prostitution Law Reform' Bill criminalises sex work. It undermines sex workers' rights & pushes sex work underground furthering discrimination against sex workers and exposing them to risks of exploitation and violence. While other Australian states & territories have adopted rights & evidence-based law reform by decriminalising sex work our once progressive state is now at risk of taking a big step backwards if this Bill progresses.
